Tips for improving CTR in a Google Grants campaign

Image
As a Google Grants volunteer, I recently participated in a project to improve the usability of AdWords by building and managing an AdWords account from a grantee's perspective. I volunteered to take one Google Grants advertiser,  Prospect 1. New Orleans , to temporarily act as its Account Manager. To make sure I got an authentic experience, I didn’t use any Google internal tools and only used the publicly available  AdWords tools . Day 1.  When I first started, I carefully examined the grantee's website to understand the organization's mission and what their targeted audience might be. They were promoting art and events in the New Orleans area, which gave me a place to begin building their account. I created a  campaign  with a single  ad group , a single  creative , and a few  keywords . It wasn't anything fancy, but let’s see what happens. Day 2.  I let the ads run for a day and then checked the results. I quickly learned that the keyword...

Innovation - The Japanese Soap Factory Story

Image
A Japanese soap factory had a problem: they sometimes shipped empty boxes, without the soap inside. This was due to the way the production line was set up, and people with experience in designing production lines will tell you how difficult it is to have everything happen with timings so precise that every single unit coming out of it is perfect 100% of the time. Customers who come all the way to the supermarket would end up buying someone else’s product. Understanding how important that was, the CEO of the soap factory got the top people in the company together and they decided to start a new project, in which they would hire an external engineering company to solve their empty boxes problem, as their engineering department was already too stretched to take on any extra effort. The project followed the usual process: budget and project sponsor allocated, RFP, third-parties selected, and six months (and $8 million) later they had a fantastic solution — on time, on budget...

10 Strategies for Leaders to Drive Disruptive Change

Image
How is it that only a few business leaders and entrepreneurs seem to drive exceptional results and disruptive innovation in this rapidly changing market economy (marketquake) ?  These few seem more adept at executing market and technology turns, not just incremental evolution. They consistently take bold steps to stay ahead of the curve, often contrary to conventional wisdom. Steve Jobs  of Apple may have been the most visible example of this ability to “see around the corner,” but others often mentioned include  Richard Branson  (Virgin Group), and  Elon Musk  (SpaceX). Most of you could suggest one more, but not many. While searching for some structure that could facilitate learning the process, I came across a classic book by  G. Shawn Hunter , “ Out Think ,” which offers  a step-by-step outline  for executives to achieve this stage of creativity. It suggests that they need to shed outmoded management and organizational biases, to...

Innovate like a Pilgrim

Image
The phrase  “Pilgrim Innovation” could appear in the dictionary as an example of the word “oxymoron,” which is defined as two contradictory terms placed next to each other in a single phrase. After all, Pilgrims are often seen as relics of a bygone era, known more for their large, shiny belt buckles, funny hats, and quaint ways than for delivering new thinking and ideas. Yet as many of us take time off this week of Thanksgiving in the United States, a brief investigation of so me of the events in the story of how the Pilgrims voyage to  America yields lessons for the modern-day innovation practitioner. Nearly every student in America  can recite the story of how the Pilgrims arrived at the tip of what is now known as Cape Cod on board the three-masted sailing ship known as the  Mayflower . Less is known, however, about the second ship that the Pilgrims originally planned to take on their voyage, the  Speedwell . Facing a long, dangerous voyage across the...
